Project Description

UNM Johnson Center Site & Landscape Design

UNM Johnson Center Site & Landscape Design transformed an outdated facility into a student-focused hub for campus activity and health. Groundwork Studio collaborated with FBT Architects and the civil engineer to reconfigure the entry to the adjacent parking structure, transforming the lackluster asphalt parking lot and driveway into a dynamic and welcoming urban space. The new entry supports the program of the Johnson Gym, compliments the architecture of the newly renovated building and knits seamlessly into the fabric of the campus.

The plan incorporates:

  • Green infrastructure best practices
  • Emergency access
  • Gathering spaces
  • Regionally appropriate shade trees and plan selections
  • A partial irrigation renovation of Johnson field
  • A historic Lobo sculpture
  • A jogging track
  • Outdoor class gathering space
  • An entry plaza
  • Ample bicycle parking
  • A custom paving pattern
